Transparent integration of BACnet
Since having a standards-based communication architecture is the key to vendor-independent building automation, Beckhoff has placed special emphasis on the transparent integration of BACnet when it designed its TwinCAT automation solution.
The rail-mountable Embedded PCs CX8091, CX9020, CX5010 and CX5020 are now certified as per BACnet standard ISO 16484:2012, Rev. 12. The controllers with stackable I/O levels provide scalable performance, ranging from the CX8091, which supports up to 250 BACnet objects in typical control applications, to the CX5020, which is recommended for applications with up to 3,000 BACnet objects. If only BACnet operations are involved, the potential number of objects is even higher. Thanks to extensive performance improvements in comparison with Rev. 6, the controllers are now capable of processing more than twice the number of BACnet objects with without change in theprocessor load. Certification as per Rev. 6, however, continues to be available for the CX9001 and CX9010 devices.
The precise scalability of the Beckhoff building controllers on the basis of performance classes provides significant cost benefits. If the users need more processor performance, they can simply switch to the next controller platform so that price and performance stay in balance at all times.
Revision 12 fully supported
With new features and new services, the implementation of BACnet Revision 12 in TwinCAT BACnet/IP provides a series of benefits in building automation applications. Besides many enhancements in alarm and event services, new BACnet object types such as Pulse Converter, Accumulator, Averaging, Event Enrolment and Structured View are available. The device management was enhanced as well. In addition, Revision 12 includes several smaller improvements, such as support for various symbol set encodings, information about device restarts, and enhanced diagnostic options.
In-house development of the BACnet stack and the experience Beckhoff gathered in a multitude of projects provide the company with the deep expertise customers expect. The PLC programming as per IEC 61131-1 supports structured BACnet function blocks for efficient project execution. And the TwinCAT BA PLC libraries will soon provide the systems integrator with established and tested basic functions in the areas of closed-loop control and signal processing, as well as special mathematical functions, fault signal processing and general system functions.
